Superman the Man of Steel with me and the dogs in Metropolis Illinois Superman the Man of Steel with me and the dogs in Metropolis Illinois

It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Superman!

Metropolis is the official "Hometown of Superman" according to DC Comics and the Illinois State Legislature. Our visit showed that the town had embraced its comic-book fame with the Super Museum and 15-foot bronze Superman statue in the middle of Superman Square. Close to the Square is a figure of Lois Lane as portrayed by actress Noel Neill. The local paper? The Metropolis Planet. (Not quite the Daily Planet, but close!)

Metropolis, Massac, Illinois is located along the Ohio River and is most easily accessible via Paducah, Kentucky. (If you like quilting, there's a museum in Paducah for you!) We saw plenty of Superman references in Kentucky too, but he may be more of an adopted son there.

When you visit Metropolis, be sure to head over to the photogenic statue of the Man of Steel and create a memory. You'll notice the superhero stands atop a pedestal promoting "Truth - Justice - The American Way" and not lost on our group, the Massac County Courthouse is right behind him. Take advantage of the quick-change telephone booth (kids, ask your grandparents) and the "offices" of the Daily Planet newspaper. If you're in the area in June, there is a Superman Celebration, focusing on the Man of Steel's crime-fighting efforts.

We stopped through town three separate times on the way to the Florida Invitational Dog Shows, and on the third trip were able to see the most extensive collection of Superman artifacts and memorabilia anywhere at the Super Museum. (517 Market Street 618/524-5518. There are statues right by the museum ($5) and gift shop to up your social media ante.

Photos from our stop in Metropolis. We shot everything with our iPhones - the best camera is the one you have with you.

Sidenote: Metropolis, Massac, Illinois is also associated with another famous figure: Robert Franklin Stroud, (January 28, 1890 – November 21, 1963) better known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz," who is buried in the Masonic Cemetery. Stroud was a convicted murdered, federal prisoner and author who has been cited as one of the most notorious criminals in the United States.

As I child I was fortunate to live in New York City and was able to go see the Superman set and "fly" on top of the blocks with the fan blowing my hair. I found this television show intro and hope you enjoy it. (No it's not me "flying" but that would have been great!
