I’ve been accompanying Riley Photography owner Kathleen on dog show trips, calendar shoots, weddings, and horse shows for many years in a supporting role. The role of second shooter, wrangler, and set designer is a very comfortable one. So when I took photos of a local contractor’s dog, edited the images, and sold it to them, I thought I was simply practicing for the planned upcoming dog show season.

The dog photos were so well-received that the clients reached out to me this Fall to ask about family photos. My initial instinct was to turn the contact and project over to Kathleen; I’d be happy to stay in my comfort zone, setting everything up and be the second shooter. Instead, I pushed myself out of my comfort level. I created the first family photos in AGES for the Liljenquist-MacDonald family.

Coordinating a date when all five daughters and their boyfriends would be able to gather when Larry might have a day out of the field took a Herculean effort by Kelly. We came up with two possible dates, and after checking the weather conditions, we decided on the earlier one. Autumn in Minnesota can be a fickle beast, but photo day turned out to be the perfect mix of sun and shade.

Kelly shared their last family photo taken was in the church basement days when the girls were considerably younger – it was time to get this done! I had my shot list, had scouted locations, double-checked my gear, and the years of second shooting eased into a wonderful family photo session.

Larry and Kelly have a beautiful home at the end of a long, tree-lined driveway. The canopy of maple leaves in all their autumn glory was a beautiful backdrop for the individual and group photos. There was lots of laughter and love. This family enjoys each other’s company.

Finding the perfect setting for ten people was a cinch with the old tractor proudly displayed in the yard. It was so fun to see the tree trunk still in the frame of the tractor.

As the golden hour waned and the evening began to cool, we shared a chili buffet, more visiting and memories being made.
